When is the best time to potty train a dog? Do you have any tips with regards to potty training?

you meant with leo! he is doing great! no more accidents. wouldn't use the puupy pad but taught the puppy how to use it. she is the problem. having a rough go with her 4months now and i think she is finally getting it that she has to go outside not just anywhere she pleases. have been kennel training her since day one.
we haven't had any rain so leo is doing good. we will see what happens when the cold weather comes and it is already on its way. supposed to rain this week.
since we have the puppy his whole attitude has changed. he grooms her and everything. that transition worked well. we picked her up the day we moved so they both moved in here together. thanks again. sunny

[b][i]we are working on it. she is doing better. but she does do spite work. i think that is going to be the hardest part. but she is starting to go to the door to let you know. i watch her like a hawk to watch for the signals. but she would always wait until i was distracted. she did get mad the other day when i put her back in her kennel and peed in it. that was only one incident and hasn't repeated itself. i think she might finally be learning. we have had no pooping or peeing inside for 4 days. that is progress here.
thanks for asking. i am taking it one day at a time. she gets treats for pottying outside- that is what the trainer told me to do. now i am not taking the treats out any more but when we i praise her only outside and make her come in and sit and stay for a treat. so i am expanding her reptoire. she is growing still can't go down those stairs though but can make it up them. i have to gate the porch so she won't jump off. she did that twice. ut was ok. thank goodness.

leo is not going inside when it rains anymore i took all of your advice and used it. he never would use the puppy pad though.
now we have a little one monet is almost 12 weeks old. i am working with a trainer. she has decided that she only has to tinkle outside and must come inside and poop on the floor. she uses the puppy pad only to tinkle. then goes next to it to poop. she is a trip. leo acts like he is her mom. he cleans her and and looks after her. but she is trying to be the boss over all of us and that is not going to work. we had success today with the potty training. she would not go at all - then finally at about 7pm tonight she caved in. i took her out every 30 minutes and she refused to do anything but sit. hopefully that and giving her treats and praising her when she does all her business outside will work.
when we go visiting she goes outside she does not go and to the bathroom in other peoples homes. that is a relief.
she hides and goes she makes sure where i am that i can't see her. leo tells on her all the time.
hopefully, working with the trainer will get me straight with monet. i believe i need the training also.
thanks for all you input.

thank you! i am going to try all. i do watch his signals- he usually will go by the door to what ever room you are in and sit real pretty with his little nose up in the air when he has to go out. we travel a lot and thank goodness this behavior does not occur anywhere but at home. i have wondered about using those pads but am concerned that when we go visit my parents that he will only want to use them and not go out at all. but will give them a try and i never thought of taking the poop outside with me . i have showed him and told him no and brought him outside but never took the poop. i do give him lots of praise when he goes outside. which he usually does even in the snow. it is just this rain. will also try to keep him out longer.
thank y'all so much.
an yes he is a spoiled stubborn little boy. i used to have a lab before him. with the exception of my labs size he was a lot easier to deal with didn't have a stubborn streak. sunny

Leo sounds like a stubborn little guy, as we know little pekes can be, so you have to "one up" him. Consistancy with him is a biggy. routine...you may also need to make more frequent trips out when it is raining to make sure you catch him when he is in the mood to go too. And I think somebody already said to watch for his "getting ready to potty" signals when it is raining to make sure you get him out. You almost have to train yourself to train him. good luck with his training!! Very Happy

Phyllis, have you tried using puppy training pads with Leo? Try putting them where he has a bowel movement. They have an attractant on them that makes dogs want to go potty on them. You can get them at Walmart.

Also, you might try showing him where he went and telling him no, then picking it up and taking it and him outside and put it in the grass for him to see. This might take several tries before he actually gets the connection. When he finally does go outside, give him a treat Like a Star @ heaven for it. Some pekes are more stubborn about potty training tha others.

I have an older guy who doesn't want to go potty outside when it is raining out either. I have found that if I just make him stay out long enough he will finally go. Hope this helps some. Leo is pretty young yet, so its just going to take some time and extra patience on your part with him.

[b][i]Leo is a year and a half old. I have noticed that when it is raining out he prefers to have his bowel movements in the house. The preferred room is my office. I feel like I am missing something here. I take him out atleast 4 times a day and then 2 times at night the last being just before bedtime. He will urinate outside when it is raining but will not have any bowel movements outside when it rains. Is this typical peke behavior? sunny
