leo was at the vet last week and had a full work up. the smelly stuff was i think a result of throwing up bile. i did what you suggested and bathed him and the smell has gone away.
thank you

Just a thought but when any of mine have been sick with the bile, i bath them, it lingers round their face, and it is really stinky! Razz

Could it be from the salmon oil caps you are giving him? Is it bad breath or just funny smelling? How long has this been going on?

Usually halitosis has oral causes, although sometimes it can be caused by other disease processes. These include:

Gingivitis (inflammation of the gums)

Periodontitis (inflammation of the tissue that surrounds the tooth)

Abscessed tooth or teeth

Bone or hair stuck in mouth

Oral ulceration

Foreign bodies in the mouth (such as plant material or grass awns)

Oral neoplasia (tumors of the mouth)

Lung diseases, such as lung cancer

Severe kidney disease

If this has been going on for awhile it would be best to have your vet check Leo out to make sure that he is not suffering from the above. If it just started you can buy dog treats and breath drops made for dogs that help combat bad breath. Also doggy toothpaste.

In addition, both dogs and cats will have terrible breath after licking their anal glands, which are filled with a thick liquid that has a room-clearing smell.
